Minori

Renowned for cultivating the Amalfi Sfusato lemon, a symbol of the coast and used in many traditional dishes.

Minori, the narcissus of the Amalfi Coast

Located in the center of the Amalfi Coast, Minori, an inlet between Capo d'Orso and Conca dei Marini, is nicknamed "the Narcissus of the Amalfi Coast" due to the unique characteristics of its terrain and the fertility of its land. Founded by the Etruscans, Minori was the first of the coastal towns to be established and later became a favored retreat for Roman aristocracy. This is evidenced by the discovery of the remains of an ancient Roman villa dating back to the 1st century AD, which today remains a major attraction for visitors.

From the Middle Ages onward, Minori became part of the Republic of Amalfi, and its port increasingly served as a commercial hub. During this time, the town developed various artisanal industries, notably pasta production. The center of Minori housed many mills powered by the waters of the Reginna River. Here, the renowned "pasta campana" was produced, including macaroni, scialatielli, and the famous “ndunderi”—a type of giant gnocchi made from splet and curdled milk, a traditional dish of Minori cuisine.

Trade with the East also facilitated the introduction of lemons to the Amalfi Coast, where they are still abundantly cultivated on terraces descending towards the sea. These terraces contribute to the distinctive and picturesque landscape that tourists from all over the world adore. The cultivation of the Amalfi Coast lemon, known as "Limone Sfusato," is particularly widespread. This lemon is renowned for its bright yellow color and rich juice, and it is used in the production of traditional liqueurs like Limoncello as well as in pastries. The famous "Delizia al Limone," a renowned lemon dessert, attracts numerous tourists each year in search of the flavors of the Amalfi Coast.

The Roman Villa

The Roman Villa of Minori, dating from 1st century AD, was discovered between 1950 and 1954. After being buried again by the debris from the flood of October 26, 1954, it was later re-excavated. This villa reflects the typical structure of the "Roman seaside villa" with the reception rooms located to the west of the complex and the baths to the east. Highlights include the Triclinium Nymphaeum, with its frescoes, mosaics, and stuccoes, and the attached Antiquarium, which displays materials from the villa's excavation as well as Roman artifacts from other villas in the area.
